A study found that most people have no idea just quite how dirty their coffee maker is. Commercial coffee makers, in particular, are hotbeds for mold and bacteria because of the sheer volume of coffee they churn out. If it’s been months (or, let’s be honest, years) since you last cleaned your coffee machine then it will probably have more germs in it than your bathroom counter. Yikes. To make sure customers don’t drink any of the mold, yeast or bacteria that coffee makers grow, we asked a barista at one of Austin’s busiest cafes, how to keep your coffee maker squeaky clean.

What You Need White vinegar Distilled water Lint free cloth Measuring cup Disinfectant spray How to Clean a Commercial Coffee Machine Do you have all the supplies you need. Let’s get started. Start by laying all of your supplies on a flat, clean surface. Sophia recommends wiping down your workspace with a lint free cloth and disinfectant spray. This prevents any unwanted germs from getting into your machine during cleaning. Pour one quart of white vinegar into a measuring jug. Then, assemble the coffee machine as normal. Simply twist and lock your coffee jug into place and then place the empty carafe onto the base plate. Open the lid and pour the vinegar into the reservoir. You can now close the lid and turn on the machine. Now, sit back and let the vinegar do its work. White vinegar is the perfect cleaning product because it penetrates the hot water tank, effectively eroding any mineral deposits that have built up inside the machine. Note that the cleaning process should take around two hours. After two hours, unplug the brewer and remove the brew funnel. Reach underneath the top of the machine and twist the spray head off in a clockwise direction. Pour a full carafe of distilled water into the top of the machine and close the lid. The water will start to flush the vinegar out from within the hot water tank. Otherwise, you’ll make a mess. Do this at least ten times until the vinegar smell subsides. For best results, we recommend using at least a 20% white vinegar concentrate or stronger. Remove the brew funnel and reinstall the spray head by twisting it into place in a counterclockwise direction. Once done, replace the brew funnel and plug the machine back in so that the water in the hot water tank can heat back up. Add some distilled water to the machine and put your carafe back on the warmer plate. That’s it. Simple, right? Experts recommend that the brew funnel and carafe should be cleaned after each use.

Bunn makes this easy by making all of their products dishwasher safe. We often get asked if the cleaning process is the same for smaller Bunn appliances, such as coffee grinders. The short answer? It isn’t. Read on to learn how to clean a Bunn commercial coffee grinder. How to Clean a Bunn Commercial Grinder Bunn commercial coffee grinders vary according to model and size, so each model will have its own specific cleaning instructions. 3 Things You Should Know Grinders must be unplugged before you clean any part of the appliance. Immersing the grinder in water destroys the grinder. Water damage voids your warranty, so do not under any circumstances put your grinder in the dishwasher. Always clean surfaces with a damp cloth and mild non-abrasive detergent. Make Your Coffee Grinder Sparkle Again Having unplugged the coffee grinder, empty the hoppers and place an empty funnel and filter into the funnel rails. Reconnect power and press grind until the coffee chamber is empty. Again, disconnect and remove the cover and the burr housing. The inside of the machine should only be cleaned with a dry stiff brush. Reassemble the coffee grinder and always refer to the product manual in case there are any special cleaning requirements. They're affordable, easy to use and versatile enough to satisfy all kinds of morning caffeine needs. Learn how to set up your Bunn coffee machine and troubleshoot it so making your morning coffee is a breeze. To do that, you'll need to fill the hot water tank with two full carafes of cold water. Importantly, Bunn manuals warn not to plug in your machine until you go through this entire set up process. Plugging it in before that might damage it permanently. Second, fill the carafe with cold water, pour it into the brewer and reposition the carafe on the warmer plate with the lid closed. Wait three minutes, then fill the carafe with cold water again and repeat the process. Wait until all of the water flows into the carafe, pour it out and reposition on the warmer plate. You only have to do this during the setup. Keep your coffee maker on if you're using it regularly, but switch it off if you're planning to be away from it for an extended period of time. If necessary, go through the setup process again. You can also try experimenting with brands, mixes and types of coffee as well as the size of the coffee grind (too fine a grind may make the coffee too bitter and too coarse will make it too weak), until you finally get that perfect cup. Seems like a large electric vampire to me! BUT there is one main difference. The VPR and similar COMMERCIAL coffee machines are quick brewers. This means it's sitting on a level table and filled with water until water sprays from the brew head. At this point the unit is plugged in and the heater is turned on (CWTF's have a toggle switch behind the machine). Brewer will pre-heat the water (there may be some water discharge from brew head as the water expands). Do not overflow tray. Allow water level to sink before adding more water. Yes there is a heater in the machine that keeps the tank warm. You can save power by turning off the warmer plates when not in use. Some units have up to 6 plates. Yes unplug the unit at night if there is no night crew drinking coffee (or tea) But follow the Pre-heat instructions mentioned above prior to plugging the brewer back in. If the tank has been emptied at night or dried up after an idle week. Then there is a chance you may over heat and blow the thermal fuse. The water evaporates and eventually drys out the pot. There are a couple of little screws that you need to undo then you will see a little dial or even a little T on top of a metal box or circuit board. I recommend that you unplug the machine before opening it up. Then just turn the thermostat down - usually counter clockwise. Turn it just a little and put the top back on the machine and let it heat up.Unplug the machine and make surePour clean water into thePlug the machine in and let it heatThe way your machine works isHope this helps.See manual here: Also, inquire with BUNN about an optional attachment for some models that will slow down the rate of water flow. Lastly, ensure that you are not over-filling the basket with grinds. There is an upper limit to how much a coffeemaker will hold, and some people try to compensate for weak coffee by adding too much.

You may need to use a toothpick to remove blockages in the spray head, and there may be a flexible wire to assist in removing blockages behind the spray head leading to the tank (refer to owner's guide). If we don't wait several hours between pots of coffee, the coffee is luke-warm at best. Does this sound like a heating element or. Seems to have done the trick - water is heating up now after 20 or so minutes instead of several hours. The problem was lime scale buildup on the heating element. I recommend using a cleaner such as Brew Rite or a vinegar solution. If it still does not heat properly, unplug and remove the heating element for cleaning. This corrected our problem. Here is a link to your units manual: go to the bottom of the page, and select the operation manual for a VPR. It is advisable to let the unit sit for approx. 20 minutes after filling, cold water works best, and you need to make sure that you pour the water in before you plug it in, as the heat circuit is always on, whether water is in it or not, including if all the water has evaporated.
